Childhood and education
William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1564 (the date of birth is not clear, but he was baptised on April 26th of that year). He is the third son of eight brothers of John Shakespeare ad Mary Arden. His father was a merchant and her mother was persecuted by her Catholic faith.

He studied in Grammar School where he learnt Latin and Greek. Although he became on of the most important writers of England, he left school soon as he was not a good student and his family had economic problems due to the fines to his mother for being Catholic.

Marriage
At the age of 18, he got married Anne Hattaway, who was eight years older than him. They had three children: Sussana, Hamnet and Judith, who were twins. Unfortunately, his son Hamnet died at the age of 11 years old. It is said that this inspired him to write Hamlet.

Moving to London
In 1588 he moved to London, where he became famous very quickly. He started to work in Lord Chamberlain's Men, where actors such as Richard Burbage worked on it. With King Jacob I, the name of the company changed into The King's Men. Furthermore, they were owners of theatres such as The Globe or Blackfriars.

In 1592, he had to move to his hometown due to the Black Death. Theatres were closed and he bought a house called New Place. It is said that he probably stayed for a time in the north of Italy, but this is not sure.

Back to London and playwright
In 1593, he wrote 'Venus and Adonis' and 'The Rape of Lucrece' which became two of his first successes. These were dedicated to the Earl of Southampton, his patron.

His first plays were happy comedies, but also he wrote historical plays about the history of England. One of his first plays 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' was about fantasy and it had the poetic sense of this period. Then, by 1600, he published the big tragedies: the so-called dark comedies. He wrote Hamlet due to his dead son. In this period plays such as 'Othello' (1603), 'The King Lear' (1605) or 'Mcbeth' (1606) were published and interpreted. In Othello, Shakespeare reflected jealousy; in Hamlet, the incapacity to act between revenge and forgiveness; and in  Mcbeth, the temptation of power.

Final years
Shakespeare spent his last years in his house of Stratford-upon-Avon. He died on 23rd April 1616 at the age of 52. He is buried in Holy Trinity Church in Stratford. The first collection of his works was published in 1623 known as The First Folio.
